CBD Oil & Drug Interactions

Research has shown cannabidiol (CBD) has potential to provide natural healing and relief to the masses. CBD gives our Endocannabinoid System support helping it to operate effectively and efficiently. On its own, CBD has not been shown to pose any health risks or negative side effects. However, is important that people who chose to use CBD as a part of their daily health regimen understand CBD’s effect on the cytochrome P450 enzyme system.

The Cytochrome P-450 (CYP450) System

The cytochrome P450 enzyme system is found in our liver and is responsible for metabolizing potentially toxic compounds, including over 60% percent of any drugs you have consumed. The CYP450 contains more than 50 enzymes that process and eliminate toxins.

Drug Metabolization in the Liver

When your doctor prescribes you a combination of any drugs, he or she determines the dosages based on the approximate time it takes for those drugs to process through the liver. Depending on the combination of drug, the processing time of one or more of them may be affected by the other. Thus, the doctor will increase or decrease dosage appropriately so that a build up of medications does not occur and all drugs are metabolized effectively and safely.

How Does CBD Effect the CYP450 System?

CBD, when taken at critically high levels, can inhibit the body’s ability to metabolize drugs that are processed by the CYP450 system, which can lead to an increase in digestion times and a buildup of medicine. Studies are still being done to determine the amount of CBD that is required for this inhibiting potential to take effect, but those levels are much higher than the regular dose (25-125mg) most people take. This almost exclusively applies to cancer patients that are attempting to use CBD in their efforts to fight the disease. CBD is not alone. . . Grapefruit and Watercress have this same inhibiting potential on the CYP450 system.

If you are taking medications, you should consult your doctor to make sure that it is safe for you to supplement your daily health regimen with CBD, particularly if you intend on taking high doses on a regular basis. You and your doctor may consider adjusting the dosage of your medications so that you can use both products safely.

List of Drugs that May Interact With CBD

Any drug processed by CYP450 enzymes could potentially interact with CBD. According to CBD pioneer, Leonard Leinow. Drugs known to use the CYP450 system include:

  • Steroids
  • HMG CoA reductase inhibitors
  • Calcium channel blockers
  • Antihistamines
  • Prokinetics
  • HIV antivirals
  • Immune modulators
  • Benzodiazepines
  • Anti-arrythmics
  • Antibiotics
  • Anesthetics
  • Antipsychotics
  • Antidepressants
  • Anti-epileptics
  • Beta blockers
  • PPIs
  • NSAIDs
  • Angiotension II blockers
  • Oral hypoglycemic agents
  • Sulfonylureas

This is not a conclusive list of potential medications impacted by CBD. Nor will every medication in the categories contained on this list cause an interaction. Thus, you should consult with your physician before adding CBD to your daily health regimen if you are taking any medications at critical levels or have pre-existing liver issues.
