Dosing Your Pet

Dosing Your Pet

How much CBD Does your Pet Need?

While it is virtually impossible to overdose your pet, we want your CBD experience to both be cost effective and beneficial to your pet. We always recommend you start with the lowest dose possible and work your way up to your pet’s ‘sweet spot’ as we like to say.

We recommend 1mg of CBD per 10 lb of body weight as a maintenance/preventative dose. What do we mean by this? Let’s say your pet is healthy and happy, but his or her breed is prone to acquire certain diseases or ailments throughout their life. In this case, we would recommend a maintenance dose. Or, for example, your cat sustained an injury but is all healed up now and you would like to keep them functioning at their best, we would also recommend a maintenance dose.

For a therapeutic dose, we always recommend 2-5mg of CBD per 10 lb of body weight. Many of us have older pets that suffer from chronic, painful conditions such as arthritis or hip dysplasia. This means your pet is regularly dealing with an uncomfortable condition. These pets will likely always require a minimum of 2mg of CBD per 10 lbs. A therapeutic dose is also appropriate for a pet recovering from an injury.

You can safely work your pet up to a dose of 5mg of CBD per 10 lbs. of body weight, over a period of time. We suggest 5 to 7-day increments before increasing their dosage. For example, if your pet is suffering from mild arthritis, you could start your pet on 1 mg of CBD per 10 lbs. of body weight once daily for about 5 days. If you do not see a significant difference, on day 6 give them 1 mg of CBD per 10 lb of body weight in the morning and 1 mg of CBD per 10 lb of body weight in the evening for about 5 days. If the problems/pain persist, increase by 1mg of CBD per 10 lb of body weight in 5-day increments until you find the most effective dosage. Some pets actually respond better to LESS. We always recommend starting out at the lowest dose possible and increase gradually.

For a real-life example to help you better understand. . . Let’s take a 50 lb dog dealing with arthritis. His owner would give him 1mg of CBD per 10 lbs. of body weight to start, which would equal 5mg. This would equate to 2 ½ RMG soft hemp chews, or approximately 1 dropper full of our 250mg Broad Spectrum CBD tincture. After 5 days of giving the above dosage every morning, the owner notices a little more activity but can tell some discomfort remains. So, they begin giving the same dose to their dog in the evenings as well. 5 days later, their dog is back to playing and running around with the other dogs. They can stay at this dosage long term.

If your pet is dealing with a more serious and potentially fatal disease such as cancer, you start your pet with a much stronger dosage and we highly recommend you contact us via email, phone, or through Facebook so we can help you maximize the benefits of the CBD against the cancer. We are happy to work with your veterinarian through this process. There are not ‘set in stone’ doses for such cases, but CBD can be very effective in stopping cancer growth and even shrinking existing tumors.

RMG Equine Hemp Pellet Dosages:

Horses from 600 lbs. and up start on 25mg (1 Tbsp of RMG Equine Hemp Pellets) per day. They can be given more (up to 125mg per day) for extenuating circumstances, but 25mg is the magic dose for most horses. Ponies 600 lbs. and under should be given 10 mg, or 1 Tsp per day, and can work their way up to 25mg as well, if needed.  Doses apply for donkeys and mules as well.

Dosing with RMG Soft Hemp Dog Chews:

Each chew contains 2 mg of CBD. They are soft and easy to break in half if your pet requires an odd number of mg (ie: 7 mg would be 3 ½ chews). An easy way to calculate the mg of CBD your pet needs based on body weight is to take the dosage you would like to start them with per 10 lbs. (1 mg: maintenance, 2 mg: therapeutic), add a decimal (.1 or .2) and multiply by their weight in lbs. (.1 x 50 lb = 5 mg of CBD; .2 x 75 = 15 mg of CBD).

Dosing with RMG Broad Spectrum 250mg Flavorless CBD Oil:

The dropper in your tincture/bottle is a 1mL dropper. However, as you will notice, your dropper may only fill 2/3’s of the way, which is approximately 5.5mg of CBD (which equals .185 mg per droplet). Dosing with  tinctures is never an exact amount, but that is Okay! It does not need to be an exact science! Relax, breath, and know you will NOT overdose your pet. The math is the same for calculating how many mg of CBD your pet needs. If you have a 10 lb. cat, your cat will need 1 mg as a maintenance dose and 2 mg as a therapeutic dose. To calculate this, you will take 1mg / .185, which is 5 ½ drops for a maintenance dose and about 11 drops for a therapeutic dose.

  • If your pet is taking other medications, please see our article about possible drug interactions.  CBD may inhibit the body’s ability to metabolize drugs that are processed by the CYP450 system, which can lead to an increase in digestion times and possibly a build-up of medicine. Studies are still being done to determine the amount of CBD that is required for this inhibiting potential to take effect. CBD is not alone. . . Grapefruit and Watercress have this same inhibiting potential on the CYP450 system.
