WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT YOUR HORSES ENDOCANNABINOID SYSTEM.
Hemp-derived CBD appears to stimulate the horse’s ECS (Endocannabinoid System) in the same way it does yours. In short, the ECS helps maintain homeostasis. Some functions regulated by the ECS include appetite, digestion, immune function, mood, sleep, inflammation, temperature, motor control and memory.
There are two main cell receptors in the ECS: CB1 and CB2. While they do intermix, they are concentrated in specific areas and have specific functions.
- CB1 Receptors:Located primarily in the brain and central nervous system, these receptors impact appetite, emotions, memory, and pain perception.
- CB2 Receptors:Concentrated in the GI tract and peripheral nervous system, these receptors modulate immune cell functions (e.g. potentially helping to reduce inflammation).
Specific health conditions that CBD for horses may improve, based on currently available studies with humans and laboratory animals include pain from arthritis, or laminitis, anxiety during stall confinement, stress during traveling or shows, ulcers or leaky gut, healing from surgery or injury, immune system depression experienced with Cushing’s Disease, appetite regulation, obesity, inflammation and insulin resistance.
DOSAGES, SIDE EFFECTS
If you are considering giving your horse CBD, it’s important to get the dosage right. A general guideline would be up to 25mg per day to boost general health, up to 80 mg per day to ease anxiety and 100-200mg per day to alleviate chronic pain. Optimum dosages will depend on the height and weight of the horse. . . and we always recommend starting low and working your way up until you find the ideal dosage for your horse. Some horses, even dealing with chronic pain, actually respond better to a lower dosage. . . So, start low (25 mg)!
