How much CBD Does Your Pet Need?
While it is virtually impossible to overdose your dog or cat with Hemp derived CBD Oil, we want your CBD experience to be both cost effective and beneficial to your pet. We always recommend starting with the lowest dose of CBD possible, and work your way up to your pet’s ‘sweet spot’, as we like to say.
We recommend 1mg of Hemp CBD per 10 lb of body weight as a maintenance/preventative dose. What do we mean by this? Let’s say your dog is healthy and happy, but his or her breed is prone to acquire certain diseases or ailments throughout their life… In this case, we would recommend a maintenance dose of CBD for your pet. Or, for example, your cat sustained an injury, but is all healed up now and you would like to keep them functioning at their best… a maintenance dose of CBD would likely be ideal.
For a therapeutic dose, we always recommend 2-5mg of CBD per 10 lb of body weight. Many of us have older dogs that suffer from chronic, painful conditions such as arthritis or hip dysplasia. This means your pet is regularly dealing with an uncomfortable condition. These pets will likely always require a minimum of 2mg of CBD per 10 lbs. A therapeutic dose of CBD is also appropriate for a pet recovering from an injury. CBD for dogs and cats can be an excellent alternative to traditional alternative medicines.
You can safely work your pet up to a dose of 5mg of CBD per 10 lbs. of body weight. We suggest 3 to 5-day increments before increasing their CBD dosage. For example, if your pet is suffering from mild arthritis, you could start your pet on 1 mg of CBD per 10 lbs. of body weight once daily for about 3-5 days. If you do not see a significant difference, on day 6, give them 1 mg of CBD per 10 lb of body weight in the morning and 1 mg of CBD per 10 lb of body weight in the evening for about 3-5 days. If the arthritis/pain persists, increase by 1mg of CBD per 10 lb of body weight in 3-day increments until you find the most effective dosage of CBD. Some pets actually respond better to LESS CBD. We always recommend starting out at the lowest dose possible and gradually increasing their daily amount of Hemp CBD.
For a real-life example to help you better understand. . . Let’s take a 50 lb dog with arthritis. His owner would give him 1 mg of CBD per 10 lbs. of body weight to start, which would equal 5 mg. This would equate to about 1/3 dropper full of Rocky Mtn Girls 500mg Broad Spectrum CBD tincture. After 5 days of giving the dog the above dosage of CBD every morning, the owner notices a little more activity but can tell some discomfort remains. So, they begin giving the same dose to their dog in the evenings as well. 5 days later, their dog is back to playing and running around, living their best life! Their dog can stay at this CBD dosage long term.
If your pet is dealing with a more serious and potentially fatal disease such as cancer, start your pet with a much stronger CBD dosage (we highly recommend you contact us via email, phone, or through Facebook so we can help you maximize the benefits of CBD). We are happy to work with your veterinarian through this process. There are no ‘set in stone’ doses for such cases, but preliminary studies have shown CBD to be effective in combating the growth of cancer cells and even shrinking existing tumors. Many customers whose pets are dealing with cancer, also notice an increase in appetite after starting CBD!
CBD Dosages for Horses:
CBD Cubes for horses are easy to administer and dose! Horses from 600 lbs. and up start on 25-50 mg of CBD per day. Horses can be given more (up to 125 mg of CBD per day) for extenuating circumstances, but 25 mg is the magic dose for most horses. Ponies 600 lbs. and under are safe to start with the 25 mg CBD Cubes, or can opt for a lower dosage via a Rocky Mtn Girls CBD Tincture.

- If your pet is taking other medications, please see our article about possible drug interactions. Hemp CBD may inhibit the body’s ability to metabolize drugs that are processed by the CYP450 system, which can lead to an increase in digestion times and possibly a build-up of medicine. Studies are still being done to determine the amount of CBD that is required for this inhibiting potential to take effect. CBD is not alone. . . Grapefruit and Watercress have this same inhibiting potential on the CYP450 system.
